The Importance of Chimney & Fireplace Inspections

JR Using Chim Scan

Everyone knows the danger of “playing with fire” and that’s exactly what you’re doing if you don’t have your chimney thoroughly inspected and evaluated each year. We feel that chimney inspections are the most important and critical service we offer. That’s because there are so many small details that need to be checked out in your chimney structure. From the condition of the mortar and masonry to the function of the flue and damper, your chimney has many moving parts and vital areas that need careful attention to be certain they are working properly.

Having a Chimney Evaluated

Chimney fires are among the most devastating and destructive tragedies that can happen in your home. In addition to fire, you should also be concerned about carbon monoxide gas. Having your chimney and fireplace evaluated regularly can detect signs of chimney damage or structural problems that can put your home at risk of fire or carbon monoxide leaks. The Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA) and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends annual chimney inspections. We agree because we know what happens when they are not done as recommended.

A chimney inspection not only helps detect signs of dangerous conditions, it also provides you with important information about the condition of the overall structure. This will help you detect problems early, before they result in major damage and costly repairs. This can save you a lot of money down the line. We are happy to answer any questions you might have as well and hope you are present during the inspection.

The 3 Levels of Chimney Inspections

  • Level 1 – This is a routine examination of all the readily accessible areas of your chimney, enclosing structure and flue. We might use hand tools but will not be intrusive at all.
  • Level 2 – A level 2 inspection is more detailed, including all of the requirements of a level 1 inspection, plus evaluation of the flue lining, clearance and proper construction of the chimney system. This includes video scanning of your chimney interior, which we highly recommend. A level 2 evaluation is also done when property is transferred.
  • Level 3 – This inspection includes all of the requirements of both levels 1 and 2, plus evaluation of the concealed areas of the building. This inspection is necessary when there are known or suspected problems with the chimney and the results most often end up as a total tear down. This is only done when there is a great deal of damage and rarely done.
