Stainless Steel Chimney Liner

Stainless Steel Chimney Liner

A stainless steel chimney liner will make your chimney operate more effectively and help protect your family from the risk of fire or exposure to dangerous gases. Because many older homes do not have liners in their chimneys, a stainless steel liner can fit inside an existing chimney to protect the bricks and mortar from soot and hot gases.

When you burn a fire in your home, hot, acidic gases are produced. These gases can get inside the mortar joints of your chimney and break down the material that binds them together. When the mortar in your chimney starts to crack and gap, it creates spaces where hot gases can escape into the walls of your home. A stainless steel chimney liner protects your bricks and mortar from these gases. The liner will also help prevent the buildup of creosote, a highly flammable substance that builds up from burning wood and other combustibles. Creosote is also corrosive, so it’s important that it be cleaned off regularly and not allowed to build up, causing damage to chimney structures and putting your home at a higher risk for a chimney fire.

Stainless steel chimney liners come with lifetime warranties and are the most popular liners today for replacement and new chimney systems. Steel liners have many benefits, including:

  • Providing a much more durable alternative to rebuilding a clay or terra cotta liner
  • Having a lifetime warrantee
  • Working well for fireplaces that burn wood, gas or oil
  • Resistant to rust, stain and corrosion
  • Available in both flexible and rigid types
  • Retaining their strength and structural integrity even with constant exposure to high temperatures inside the chimney

There are galvanized chimney liners available as well. They do not have the structural integrity the steel liners have or the warrantee but are still a viable option if price is an important consideration.
