Dampers are More Important than You Might Think

Energy Efficient Top Sealing Damper

Energy Efficient Top Sealing Damper

Your chimney damper is a metal plate or seal that closes off the opening of your chimney when it’s not in use. Your damper is a very important part of your fireplace. When the damper is closed, it keeps cold air from flowing down the chimney and into your home, unnecessarily increasing your heating bills. On the other hand, if you leave your damper open when you aren’t using your chimney, it can allow warm air to escape your home through the chimney, also causing an increase in your heating costs. For this reason, it’s important to make sure your chimney damper is working properly.

Different Dampers

There are a few different types of chimney dampers. Most chimney dampers are located at the bottom of the chimney where it is connected to the smoke chamber, known as a “throat” damper. Typically, you open and close these dampers with a handle or knob. There are also top-sealing dampers. These are operated with a handle attached to a cable connected to the damper at the top of the chimney.

Why We Recommend Top Sealing Damper for Replacements

Our technicians have the skills and knowledge to troubleshoot any problems you’re having with your damper. In many cases, it may be a matter of getting a replacement part to make a repair. Typically, we can find replacement parts for your damper if necessary. However, if your damper is no longer in production, making it difficult or impossible to get replacement parts, it might be necessary to replace it.

A top sealing damper seals the flue off at the top and not at the throat. This means the air inside the flue will neutralize with the air temperature of your home so you won’t be fighting against the cold air in the flue during the winter months and hot air in the summer. Studies have shown you can save up to 10% of heat loss during the winter with a top sealing damper. That’s good enough for us.

Repair or Replacement

Our technicians will analyze your chimney damper mechanism and make sure it is working properly. When it comes to installing a new damper or repairing the old one, we can recommend any needed repairs and order replacement parts, or we can install a new damper. If you need a new damper, we will review all of the options available and help you select the best choice for your fireplace and your home.
