Chimney Leaks & Why You Need to Act Quickly

11 chimney-repair-diagramWater can be a powerful force for destruction—especially when it comes to your chimney. It is absolutely critical to make sure your chimney has proper protection from water and moisture penetration. Once you know you’re having water problems, you need to have your chimney inspected right away. Once water gets a foothold, it can cause costly damage to your chimney structure in a relatively short amount of time.

When it comes to water leaks, the first step in solving the problem is to determine the source. We will do a thorough inspection of your chimney to find out where and how the water is getting in. We will examine the following areas to check for water:

  • Flashing around your chimney. Is the flashing damaged or improperly installed?
  • Roof. Do you have loose shingles or roof damage around the chimney that is causing the leak?
  • Chimney cap. Is the chimney cap cracked or deteriorated?
  • Chimney structure. What is the condition of the brick and mortar? Is water penetrating the chimney walls?

The Diagnosis

Once we are able to determine the source of your water problem, we will make recommendations for how to fix it. Our technicians can handle any chimney-related leak repairs, including repairs to flashing, chimney caps and the chimney itself.

Since most chimneys are made of brick and mortar, and this is porous material, you must stay vigilant about water problems. All masonry chimneys will absorb water. Most of them dry out very quickly, but when the chimney takes on an extreme amount of water, it can cause problems. This happens when multiple storms come through in a short period of time, never allowing the brick and mortar a chance to dry out and literally soaking through the brick causing condensation on the inside of the chimney, which runs down the walls into the firebox.

Water problems can quickly lead to expensive damage—damage that can cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars to repair. If you think you might have a problem with water in or around your chimney, don’t hesitate to call us. We will track down the source of the problem and determine the best way to keep your chimney safe and dry.

While water will not cause your house to go up in flames, this should be considered an emergency because of the amount of damage water can do to your home in a small amount of time.
